The Andalusi Almanac evokes water resources in Al Andalus during 2025

The Andalusi Almanac dedicates 2025 to water

The Almanaque Andalusí has focused this year’s calendar on the social and ecological value of water in the Islamic culture of the Iberian Peninsula. Both in the rural world and in urban life, water management and distribution acquired a vital importance in Al Andalus. All that hydraulic culture has left an impressive legacy of irrigation ditches, waterwheels, cisterns, pools, baths and fountains that still remain in the territory a millennium later.

The Almanaque Andalusí dedicates the months of 2025 to various water elements that played an essential role in the Islamic Middle Ages. January, for example, is dedicated to the Fuente de Aynadamar, located in the municipality of Alfacar, whose irrigation channel fed the cisterns of the Albaicín from the 11th century onwards.

The irrigation system of Umayyad Cordoba is another of the hydraulic infrastructures highlighted in the Almanaque Andalusí. The vestiges of the network of waterwheels that were built on the Guadalquivir River as it passed through the capital of Al Andalus still survive today. One of them, the Albolafia, is part of the city’s coat of arms.

The Aljibe of Cáceres, the Baths of Denia, the Pila of Xátiva or the irrigation ditches of the Sierra Nevada are also honored in this full-color printed calendar that includes excellent photographs of many of the Andalusian traces that are still preserved in the field.

El Almanaque Andalusí is a joint heritage dissemination initiative, promoted by the Sharquí association, together with Fundación Las Fuentes, Asociación Ben Baso, The Arts Society Nerja, MemoLab of the University of Granada, Museo Arqueològic de la Ciutat de Dènia and the city councils of Granada, Xàtiva and Mêrtola.
