Al Andalus Medina Network is an innovative project aimed at highlighting the heritage of Al-Andalus

Al Andalus Medina Network, a leading European project in sustainable heritage management

It will participate alongside initiatives from Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Portugal in a Green Heritage webinar

Al Andalus Medina Network is among the half-dozen European projects recognized for their best practices in the areas of research, cooperation, and the sustainability of historical heritage. The Green Heritage initiative, sponsored by the European Union, has been included in the exclusive group of innovative proposals that will participate in a webinar on June 26, coordinated by Ivo Oosterbeek and Sara Nasi.

Al Andalus Medina Network was founded in 2023 as a cultural and tourism project promoted by the Las Fuentes Foundation with the goal of connecting dozens of towns in Spain and Portugal rich in Al-Andalus historical heritage and to jointly revitalize a centuries-old legacy with enormous potential. The project, which aims to become a benchmark for Andalusian cultural heritage, is directed by Professor Bárbara Ruiz Bejarano.

Next Friday’s webinar will feature several European programs, including the Archaeowild Project (Serbia), Feenert (Spain-Portugal), and FAISIH (Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia), as well as the Medinas Network. They will all share their experiences and offer their solutions on how cultural heritage and environmental sustainability can be harmoniously integrated into different geographic contexts.

Green Heritage aims to make the webinar a “space for open dialogue” among all its participants, with the goal of discussing challenges and identifying “opportunities” in a field that is constantly growing. The initiative aims to strengthen the “community of practice” as a forum for professionals, cultural agents, and key stakeholders committed to sustainability, heritage, and innovation to come together.

The Green Heritage project aims to integrate cultural heritage—specifically that of archaeological parks—with the promotion of the concept of sustainability among younger generations. This initiative, supported by the European Union, aims to “address a significant gap in today’s education” by linking the management of cultural sites with active environmental learning.
