On the banks of the Guadiana, this Portuguese town was an important commercial enclave. Also known as the last port of the Mediterranean, the mineral trade made Roman and Andalusian Mêrtola a prosperous place. Vestiges of these periods, numerous monuments and museums in situ, make this medina an example of how the historical heritage is integrated into the life of the neighbors and how the local economy revolves around the heritage. With its wide heritage and cultural offer, Mêrtola joins The Andalusi Medina Network to enhance the development of its old town and promote its museums and archaeological field. We also highlight the Islamic Festival, where music, culture, entertainment and a popular souq are distributed through the streets in May for twenty years. The new projects of the Municipal Chamber include a Casa de Chá (Tea House) and a hammam where you can enjoy natural treatments with local products in the silence and half-light of its rooms.
