Conference by Bárbara Ruiz Bejarano on 'The Exodus of the Moors' at the Mértola Islamic Festival 2023

Music and culture at the Islamic Festival of Mértola

Nearly 60,000 people once again thronged the streets of Mértola (Portugal) to participate in its famous Islamic Festival, which is held every two years. Music, dance, exhibitions, conferences, workshops and a large souk evoked the Islamic past of the Portuguese city, which has a medina, a citadel, several museums and important archaeological remains that attest to the historical importance of the town.

Mértola is part of the Network of Medinas, which integrates dozens of Andalusian cities of the Iberian Peninsula. In its last edition, the Islamic Festival of Mértola received the sponsorship of the Las Fuentes Foundation for two of its activities. On the one hand, it promoted the conference After Al Andalus. The exodus of the Moors. It also sponsored the screening, and subsequent discussion, of the documentary film The Mudejar Lightby David Segarra and Víctor Serna.
